About Our Coaches

These are the people who make Slate work

CLAY BRADEN

Owner/Head Coach

CrossFit Level 1 Trainer

CrossFit Gymnastics
USAW – Club Coach
I first tried CrossFit over 10 years ago, in 2008, while serving in the military and preparing for tryouts for the Navy wrestling team. I immediately fell in love with CrossFit, the community, the intensity, and the results. My passion for wrestling was replaced with one for CrossFit. I got out of the military in 2010 and began coaching full time in Jacksonville, FL. I soon began competing in the sport of CrossFit, qualifying for the Southeast Regionals on our gym’s team in 2012. I then moved to Okinawa, Japan in late 2012 and coached at one of the most renowned CrossFit gyms in the Asia region for four years. While in Okinawa I continued competing in the sport of CrossFit at the Asia Regionals in both 2013 and 2014 as an individual and again in 2016 on a team. In 2014 I broke into the top 10 in all of Asia. I moved to Shoreline, WA in late 2016 and soon became the Head Coach and co-owner of Slate CrossFit.

There are 3 things that guide me as I continue to grow Slate. The first is results. No matter where you are in your fitness journey and no matter where you are going, Slate can help you reach your goals. I carefully design our programming to maximize individual improvement and growth in all aspects of health and fitness. Second, I want our members to have as much fun as possible in the process. Each hour that you spend at Slate should be filled with laughter, friends, and encouragement. Third, consistency and longevity are the key to continued results. It doesn’t matter if you are 20 or 70, my goal is for you to be healthy and active for the rest of your life. Slate programming focuses on fixing weaknesses, improving movement patterns, and building your body rather than tearing it down.

As a coach, I am dedicated to ensuring that you are continually improving, having a blast, and are able to remain fit and active for years to come.

As an owner, I am dedicated to constantly improving your experience within our doors, to growing our amazing community, to constantly improving our coaching and facility, and to creating the greatest gym in the world.

Join us at Slate and we will show you that FITNESS IS FUN!

Karny Jacoby, MD FPMRS CPI

Owner
I grew up in Seattle, a graduate of Franklin High School, and then spent 8 years as a Husky at University of Washington.  I received my undergraduate degree with honors in Cellular and Molecular Biology, then my medical degree.  I spent 6 years at University of Texas Health Sciences, San Antonio in residency training for Urology.  I am triple board certified in Urology, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, and in Research Medicine.

I started my own solo private Urology practice in 1992 with an emphasis in Female Urology and added partners over the years.  After 25 years in private practice as Urology Northwest, we sold to the University of Washington and are now part of UW/Northwest Hospital and Medical Center.

I’ve been involved in sports and fitness my entire life, but started Crossfit in 2010 after a back injury at work made me rethink how I approached movement patterns.  My interest and focus with my patients, and really anyone who will listen, is wellness and prevention.  I started Slate Crossfit in 2013 because I wanted to create a welcoming space where clients could achieve their goals without judgment and with lots of support from both the coaches and from the Slate community.

JOHN PATTY

CrossFit Level 1 Trainer

John is our newest coach, having been a client at Slate for two years. He approached us as wanting to step into a bigger role and is filling the shoes out well.

As someone who has started lifting and exercise at Slate, John is keenly aware of what it is like to begin from “square one” and to need patience, consistency, and support to see improvement. If you have questions about how to start, tips and tricks, and what you should focus on during your first few months, John is your guy!

BILL POLA

CrossFit Level 2 Trainer
CrossFit Rowing
CrossFit Gymnastics
I often will use the phrase “Bill is Bill.” He is a unique character and a unique coach.
Get to know Bill and you’ll learn that he was a band manager for some famous bands “back in the day.” He’ll probably tell you about his two kids and how one loves CrossFit and the other is taking some convincing. More importantly he’ll tell you about his experience using CrossFit to not only maintain his health, but to improve it.

Bill is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Washington Army National Guard where is actually a battalion commander. He has also been an educator at UW working with ROTC students. His balanced background as a leader and a teacher shine during his classes at Slate. Above all he is a dedicated CrossFit coach who loves rowing, teaching and working with clients from many backgrounds.

BUIFORD MARTIN

CrossFit Level 1 Trainer

NSCA – CPT
First off. Buiford has a nickname. We learned this a couple of months ago. “Big Sexy” is an apparent self-moniker and once it was said once, it stuck. So know that.
Buiford is local high school wrestler (Cleveland HS) who continues to coach and be active in the wrestling community. He discovered CrossFit as a way to continue staying in shape and soon after became a CrossFit coach.
A client once told me that Buiford has a way of bringing excitement and energy to the building in a way that no other coach can here. He puts a smile on my face everytime I take his class. In addition to an infectious energy, Buiford is a technically gifted and knowledgeable coach who helps clients improve daily.
Buiford was recently accepted into EWU’s Exercise and Sport Science program and will be attending this fall.

ALLISON KING

Olympic Weightlifting Coach
Allison King is a CrossFit OG. She started out doing CrossFit at the very first affiliate (then called CrossFit North) and immediately fell in love with it as an exercise program and as a sport. She would continue on, improving over the years to qualify for The CrossFit Games in Carson, CA both as a individual competitor and as a team member.
CrossFit also served as her introduction into the world of Olympic Weightlifting. She is both an accomplished athlete and a gifted coach in this technical world. Her classes are difficult and challenging, but her expertise and knowledge will help you improve quickly and consistently.
Allison is a full-time firefighter with the Seattle Fire Department, a full-time mother of two and wife of a doctoral student. Her dedication and ability to juggle her busy schedule is both admirable and inspiring
